Information for International applicants

Applicants must be in possession of:

Refer to the list of country-specific qualifications

a Bachelor degree obtained with Second Class (Honours) or better in the same area or in a closely related area of study as the area of study applied for, or
a Bachelor degree in the same area or in a closely related area of study as that applied for, with an average mark of not less than 65% in that area of study, or similar qualifications deemed by the Board relevant to that chosen for the Course, or
a degree from this or another university, which the Board considers as comparable to any of the degrees indicated in paragraphs (a) and (b).

The Board may also consider applicants in possession of degrees or qualifications other than those referred to in (a) to (c) if they also present a portfolio of work confirmed to have been carried out by them and which is related to the area of study applied for to the satisfaction of the Board.

Applicants applying in terms of (b), (c) and those referred to in the previous paragraph may be required to follow a preparatory programme.

Applicants shall indicate the provisional title for the dissertation on their application for admission. The application shall include a research proposal as well as a statement by the head of department concerned that applicants possess the training, knowledge and capabilities required for the proposed line of study and research.

This programme of study is also offered on a full-time basis. Please consult the Registrar's website for more information pertaining to courses offered by the University.

Since research-based programmes are primarily dedicated to tutored investigations (80 ECTS credits) and taught study-units (10 ECTS credits), you will have acquired a solid framework in the area of study together with a focused research direction evidenced by a dissertation proposal at the time of application. If you are intending to undertake this path of further studies, you are encouraged to contact members of the Faculty before they make a formal presentation of your proposal. The Faculty will accept such proposals once it can ascertain it has the capability to offer support in the area requested by the student.

In addition to the research component, students are required to register for 10 ECTS credits in taught study-units as directed by the Board.

* Work on the dissertation is expected to start in semester 2 of academic year 2024-25 and continues up to the end of semester 1 of academic year 2027-28.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the Degree of Master of Arts - M.A. - under the auspices of the Faculty of Media and Knowledge Sciences.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

Have required research skills and experience in undertaking research at a postgraduate level.
Further your understanding of particular issues related to the researched area.
Be able to research into more vital venues and in areas as yet unexplored.
Discuss, argue and critique a standpoint within a particular area of knowledge.
Demonstrate a deeper understanding in a specific area within a field of knowledge.
Choose among different methodological approaches on the basis of the question you are meant to answer.

As a graduate of this course, you will be able to enter a career as a researcher in the field and as a teacher of the area. Since this postgraduate doesn't prepare you for a specific career, you will have more flexibility to enter a career in any area that falls under media and communications. Further studies at a doctorate level will be available to you locally or abroad.
